Pattern by Aya Kawabata
Aya Kawabata is always very interested in the relationship between traditional and contemporary ideas. This textile is made by Japanese traditional paper cut technique Ise Katagami : and dying technique Chusen: 鬄翬. It is very old and basic technique, but using contemporary imagery, and colors gave it a new feeling. We live in the present, constantly stuck between the future and the past. So She thinks her work is always trying to connect these three different timelines.
Each repetation of the geometalic images are slightly diffarent, because all of the process is in being carried out by hand. The differences in these details give us an emotion resembling a natural nature such as different leaves and petals that have the same shape but not the same shape.
